Autumn Mushroom
Amanita brunnescens
Amanitaceae (Amanitas) Mushroom Family
To recognize this large mushroom, look for a brownish cap, stem slightly viscid, and cottony warts and patches around the cap margin. The mushroom flesh is thin and white. The base is bulbous and thick. Its veil is membranous, white, breaking irregularly to hang in shreads or patches as a superior ring or sometimes pulling free from the stalk altogether. The preferred habitat of Autumn Mushroom is hardwood forests and mixed woods, as well as sandy slopes.
