The plant is an upright, hairy annual. Its preferred habitat is abandoned fields, roadsides, and waste sites. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.
The leaves are alternate on the stem, consisting of one whole part and sessile (no leaf stalk. The lower leaves are entire to deeply lobed. The upper leaves are linear, entire to toothed.
The flowers are terminal on long peduncles, bisexual in nature and symmetrical in form. There will be numerous disc flowers, each having a toothed tip to fringed. The color is blue, violet, or occasionally white or pink. There are no ray flowers.
Fruit is achene (a seed which outer layer is fused to it).
