Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 167. The Brown-spotted Zale is very similar to the Gray-banded Zale but without the pale gray basal area. The ante-median line is more widely zigzag with higher peaks. The general warm brown shading is most conspicuous in the diffuse spot beyond the black reniform spot. The caterpillar host plants are larch, pines, jack and white oak.
