Identification Covell, Moths of Eastern North America,
Page 52 -- A large moth easily recognized by its size and red
body with a white collar and abdominal cross bands. The wings
are dark brown with red shading in the basal area of the forewing,
crescent eye-spot, and beyond the post-median line on all wings.
The caterpillar host plants are ash, beech, birch, elm, maple
and poplar trees.
