Tricholomataceae (Tricholomas) Mushroom Family
 
Club-footed mushrooms rarely reach a height of more than 3 inches. The cap is brown or gray-brown, often with paler margins. The plants are usually misshapen from being crowded together in large clusters. Its gills run down the stem; white to cream in color. The stem is brown or dingy buff, with a bulbous base. Spores are white.  Its preferred habitat is under conifers, but also found in mixed woods or along logging roads, usually after the weather becomes cool and moist in early September.
