Asteraceae (Composite Sunflower) Family
Plant is an upright, smooth perennial with a taproot. Preferred habitat is wet ditches and alluvial woods. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.
Leaves are opposite on the stem (perfoliate) and cupped around it to appear as though the stem has grown through the leaf; lance-like; forms an angle to the left with sides less than equal. Margins are toothed.
Flowers are a large panicle of heads; symmetrical in shape. Disc flowers are sterile; dark brown. Ray flowers are bisexual and numerous; yellow. Flowers occur in late spring and early summer.
Fruit is achene in which the outer layer is fused to the seed.
