Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 160. The forewing is pale tan, reddish in some Florida specimens. The lines are brownish, faint, except for some black accenting of post-median and sub-terminal lines and series of black dots representing the terminal line. The reniform spot is black-edged. There will be a single black basal and orbicular dots and diffuse double blackish patch over the upper sub-terminal line. The hindwing is dark gray. The caterpillar host plant is decaying logs and stumps of chestnuts, oaks and hickories.
