The Eastern Amberwing Dragonfly may be known as Firecracker Skimmer or Flame Dragonfly. This is a bright orange-red dragonfly with flame-red coloration extending out onto the wings. The drangonfly is generally found around slow moving streams and small ponds having dense vegetation. The nymphs are found living in the thick, black mud of pond bottoms and the still water of small streams. This dragonfly is found throughout most of the southeast, south and southwestern states -- not rare, simply rarely seen because of its preferred habitat.
