Plant is an upright, hairy perennial with corms (a thickened, short underground stem). Preferred habitat is woods, prairies, savannas (rarely at roadside). Distribution is coastal in the Escambia region.
Leaves are alternate on the stem; linear; no teeth and no lobes.
Flowers are in a spike or raceme of heads; bisexual; symmetrical in shape; white, pale lavender or pink. Each flower is subtended by long bracts that appear to be petals. Ray flowers are not present. Flowering occurs in the summer and autumn.
Fruit is a seed which outer layer is fused to it.
