Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 368. The wings are yellow. Spring specimens have faint vertical brown streaks on the forewing. The post-median line is broad, complete, straight or bulging slightly outward. The hindwing has gray shading at the anal angle. Summer broods (form "arrogaria") have much gray shading on the forewing, and the post-median line is visible only at the costa and toward the inner margin. The discal spots are small to absent. The caterpillar host plants are ash, birch, maple, oak, cherry, and spruce.
