Plant is an upright, smooth perennial from a corm. Its preferred habitat is savannas, pine woods, moist open sites and bogs. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

Leaves are basal; linear; no teeth and no lobes.

Flowers are in a raceme at the end of a tall stem. Sepals and petals are similar except the central lip, which is showy and fringed; pink or occasionally white. Flowers occur in the spring and early summer.

Fruit is a capsule.
