Identification: Oplar, USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research
Center, Butterflies of Alabama.
Gray Hairstreak has a wing span of 7/8 to 1-3/8 inches.
There is one tail on the hindwing. The upperside is blue-gray
with a large red spot near the tail. The underside is dark gray
(summer form is pale gray). There is a relatively straight white
post-median line, bordered with orange on the inside edge. The
caterpillar host plants are all members of the pea, mallow and
clover families. |
