Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 94. The forewing is violet-gray with a dark red border beyond the sub-terminal line. Lines are indistinct. The post-median line is usually a series of small dark dots. The reniform spot is outlined with whitish and filled with black and reddish spots. The hindwing is pearly white with grayish-brown at the outer margin. The caterpillar food stuff is beets, clover, grasses, tobacco, and other low plants.
