Plant is an upright, miniature shrub (no more than six inches high); no branches; single stem. Preferred habitat is open woods and secondary roadsides. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region except directly at seashore.

Leaves are small; opposite on the stem; widest at the middle; partly clasping.

Flowers are about 3/4 inches broad; yellow; four petals with sepals of unequal size.  Flower is at the top of a short stalk; usually begins to nod after the flower has fully matured. Flowers occur in the summer.

Fruit is a capsule.
