Identification: Oplar, USGS Internet pages, Butterflies of Alabama - The Monarch butterfly has a wing span of 3-4 inches. Its primary colors are brown to orange-brown; the wings are white-spotted with black borders and dark veins. The male has a dark scent patch along the fifth vein of the hindwing. Its preferred habitat is fields, grasslands, gardens and groves.
