Narrowleaf Sunflower - Swamp Sunflower

Asteraceae (Composite Sunflower) Family

Plant is an upright, hairy perennial with a rhizome from which new growth emerges. Preferred habitat is roadsides, savannas, woodlands and pine forests. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

Lower leaves are opposite on the stem and upper leaves are of alternate arrangement; linear to narrowly lance-like; no teeth and no lobes.

Flowers are solitary heads that are symmetrical in form. Disc flowers are bisexual and reddish brown. Ray flowers are female, numerous and yellow. Flowering occurs in the summer and extends through autumn.

Fruit is a seed which outer layer is fused to it (achene).
