Plant is a prostrate, hairy perennial with a taproot. Its preferred habitat is roadsides, prairies, pine woods and fields. Distribution is throughout the our region except directly at seashore.

Leaves are stalked; palm-like with three to five lobes or dissected parts. Margins are toothed and leaf base is mostly squared at the tip.

Flowers are solitary on the stem; stalked and purple. Each flower has 5 petals that are a rich wine-color, with a white eye. Flowers occur in late spring and throughout summer.

Fruit is a capsule.
