This is a carnivorous plant with a large, solitary, purplish-red flower on a leafless stalk rising above a rosette of bronzy, reddish-green, hollow, inflated, curved leaves. Its preferred habitat is sphagnum bogs. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

The leaves are 4 to 12 inches long, with a broad flaring terminal lip covered with stiff, downward-pointing hairs.

The flowers are about 2 inches wide; 5 petals and 5 sepals; numerous stamens. The style is expanded into an umbrella-shaped structure. Flowers occur anytime between May and August.
