The plant is a deciduous shrub. Its preferred habitat is savannas, roadsides, ditches and waste areas. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

The leaves are alternate on the stem, with leaflets arranged in two compound ranks. The leaflets are linear to oblong in form. There are no teeth and no lobes.

The flowers are a raceme arising from the leaf axil. The calyx is purplish to red, consisting of five reddish-orange to reddish-purple petals. There are 10 stamens. Flowers occur in the spring and summer.

Fruit is a legume arranged in a triangular-shaped pod.

The related S. macrocarpa is an upright annual covered with a white coating (like a grape). S. vesicaria is an upright smooth to hairy annual with yellow flowers. S. Drummondii is a semi-shrub with yellow flowers.
