Plant is an upright, smooth perennial with fibrous roots. Preferred habitat is savannas, bogs and wet ditches. Distribution is throughout the Escambia River region.

Leaves are solitary on the stem (occasionally two will appear).

Flowers are one to three at the end of a flowering stem. Sepals and petals are similar except the central lip, which is showy and usually fringed is pink or whit; fragrant. Flowers occur in the late spring and early summer.

Fruit is a capsule.
