Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 334. This species and the Wavy Lined Heterocampa are very difficult to distinguish. Patterns and colors are similar and variable in both. The forewing os this moth is deep green with variable gray shading. The lines and veins are black, inconspicuous. The sub-terminal line is a series of small black spots. The reniform spot is a black crescent within a light gray oval. Melanic specimens are much darker gray. The hindwing is gray. The caterpillar host plants are apple, beech, birches, maples, sumacs, and other trees.
