To identify the Scaly Lentinus look for a plant which cap is whitish to buff, developing small brown scales. The gills run down the stem, are wide-spaced and toothed at the edges. The stem is usually white with its collar near the top; often scaly below the collar. The stem base is brown to wine-red. Spores are white to buff. Preferred habitat is on the rotting wood of oak or other broad leaf tree stumps.
