Identification Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Pg. 315. The forewing is pale to dark brownish-gray, shaded with soft brown. The ante-median and post-median lines are black and unbroken. There is a pale triangular apical patch along the costa. The pear-shaped reinform spot is black and gray, open at the top, but closed at the bottom, where it meets the subreniform spot. The hindwing is yellowish orange with black bands. The marginal band is broken near the anal angle. The caterpillar host plant is a variety of oak.
