Plant is an upright, smooth perennial with fibrous roots. Preferred habitat is savannas, swamps, moist pine woods and bogs. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

Leaves are solitary; lance-like to widest at the middle; forms an angle to the left; pointed and pinched.

Flowers are at the end of the stem; usually single but occasionally a pair; subtended by a leaf-like bract. Sepals are linear to lance-like and nearly three inches long; brownish in color. Petals form a tube but may be white occasionally; lip is prominent; three lobes and strongly veined. Flowers occur the early summer.

Fruit is a capsule.
