Fetid Dog Stinkhorn Mushroom
Mutinus caninus
Stinkhorn Mushroom Family (Phallaceae)

In the beginning this mush-
room appears like an egg and is often mistaken as a puffball.  As the egg matures the plant swells with water and lengthens rapidly, emit-
ting a powerful, putrid aroma.

To identify the Stinkhorn, look for a pink foamy-
looking stalk; the tip is tapered and covered with an olive-green slime. All of the egg-shaped base is under-
ground.

Habitat is on humus piles and mulch or woody debris.
