Stokesia is also known as Stokes Aster and Star Flower. Plant is an upright, smooth to hairy perennial. Preferred habitat is moist ditches, rich pine woods and the margin of ponds and lakes. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region. Leaves are alternate on the stem; consisting of one whole part; no leaf stalks; thick. Lower leaves are widest at the center, becoming lance-like upward; margins are toothed. Flower is a solitary head at the end of a stem; short flower
stalk; bisexual; symmetrical in form. Disc flowers are blue (rarely
white). Ray flowers are numerous; tip is five lobed and dark
to light blue. Flowers occur in late spring and the summer. |
