Plant is a small shrub with spreading crown, few branches, 6 to 10 feet tall. Preferred habitat is thick woods, swampy areas and the margin of stream sand bars. Distri-
bution is throughout the Escambia region.

Leaves are opposite; consisting of one whole part; stalked; lance-shaped; tapering to the tip with unequal sides. Leaf margins are toothed and base is wedge-shaped.

Flowers are in the leaf axil; stalked; symmetrical; five petals that are small and greenish. Flowers occur in the spring.

Fruit is a leathery capsule that turns scarlet at maturity.
