Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 53. The body is extremely hairy. The head, front, and sides of the thorax are white. The middle of the thorax is black. The abdomen is white to gray. The wings are pale to dark gray with white veins and lines. The post-median line is broad, almost straight. The caterpillar host plants are apple, ash, birch, elm, oak, plum, and other trees.
