Identification: Covell, Moths of Eastern North America, Page 334. The forewing is powdery gray, variably shaded with grayish brown. Some individuals have a contrasting dark grayish-brown patch bounded by the reniform spot, post-median line and the costa. The ante-median and post-median lines are black, double and scalloped, filled with lighter gray. The reniform spot is white, often with black filling. The hindwing is gray. The caterpillar host plants are birch, elm, hawthorn, linden, oak, and walnut.
