Identification: Oplar, USGS Internet pages, Butterflies of Alabama - The Variegated Fritillary has a maximum wingspan of nearly four inches. The upperside is tawny-orange in color, with thick dark veins and markings; black spots near the margin. The hindwing margin is angled and slightly scalloped. The underside of the hindwing has a mottled pattern and no silver spots. Its preferred habitat is gardens, swamp surroundings, the edge of forests, roadsides and waste areas.
