The plants are upright, smooth perennials that root from stem nodes. Its preferred habitat is wet ditches, edge of ponds and wet lawns. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

The leaves consist of one whole part on long, slender stalks; usually round with the stem attached at the center of the leaf. The leaf margins are slightly toothed, and the color is bright green and waxy.

The flowers are branched umbels, appearing in whorls on the branches. Each flower is bisexual in nature and symmetrical in form. The color is greenish. Flowers occur through spring, summer and autumn.

Fruit is a flattened schizocarp.

The related H. umbellata has a simple umbel of flowers and H. verticillata has whorled umbels that are simple and unbranched.
