Plant is an upright, tall annual; spindly stems (often called a lily in error). Preferred habitat is marshy areas, moist grounds and at the margin of brackish pools. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

Leaves are mostly basal but scattered saw-toothed leaves do extend upward and clasping the stem.

Flowers are small heads hidden in clusters of small spikes at the base of broad bracts. The white bracts surrounding the head is said to be the flower. Flowers occur in the summer and autumn.
